NAME: Aerith Gainsborough
AGE: 22
CANON: Final Fantasy VII
CANON POINT: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Chapter 6 (arrival at Costa del Sol)
CRAU: n/a
OTHER: n/a

SUITABILITY:
Aerith more than meets the game's minimum age requirement. While sex as a concept is more alluded to than dealt with explicitly in FFVII, the story centers in part around a love triangle-cum-love square of sorts. Across the series but particularly in Rebirth, Aerith makes no secret of her romantic feelings, and shows a desire to be close to the people to whom she's attracted. Her character development takes her from being a free-spirited but sheltered young girl to someone more world-wise, as the events of the stor force her to mature during the party's journey. She knows she's important to her world's fate, and it will be interesting to see how well she deals with being torn away from that, as well as to see the impact it will have on her as a person.

HISTORY:
Aerith is half-human, half-Cetra, born to the last pureblood Cetra and therefore the last of her kind. Aside from giving her powers unique to her bloodline, this fact has also shaped Aerith's life in a number of ways. From her infancy until she was about seven years old, she and her birth mother were held in captivity by the Shinra Company, where they underwent a number of different experiments in the hope of the corporation finding the Promised Land, a legendary Cetran location said to hold infinite amounts of planetary energy. While the experiments performed on Aerith were mild, she witnessed her mother undergo cruel, painful tests. Eventually, a scientist helped them escape to the Sector 5 slums, where she was adopted by a kind woman after her mother passed. Aerith grew up and continued to live in Sector 5, monitored closely by her mother, who wanted to keep her protected, and by Shinra's Turks, who maintained their surveillance in hope of learning about the Promised Land's location.

When she was 22, Aerith met Cloud Strife when he fell through the roof of the Sector 5 Slums church in which she maintained and cared for a patch of flowers. When he left to continue on his journey, she forced him to bring her along. She never outright states her reason for this, but in the original continuity it can be assumed either that she wanted the freedom he had, or that his personality, similar to her ex-boyfriend's, drew her along. In Remake/Rebirth, she seems instead to remember something of who Cloud is, of his importance to her, and of her importance to his mission. This journey would end up being a fateful one for Aerith, as not only would she have the chance to go head-to-head with the company that stole so much of her childhood, but she would also discover the importance of her abilities in protecting the planet from Sephiroth. In the end, her choice to join this mission led to her death, but also led to her saving the planet from beyond.

ABILITIES:
Aerith is the last of the Cetra, a race of people able to both communicate with the planet Gaia and guide its spiritual energy. As she states herself during the original game's timeline: "The Cetra were born from the Planet, speak with the Planet, and unlock the Planet." This power means that she knows things that she shouldn't know, such as when a soul passes into the Lifestream (death). In the Remake timeline, she is also partially aware of events of the original timeline and it being fate for her to die in order to save the planet, as well as being aware of experiences that she is having in alternate realities. Aerith implies in some cases that she gets this knowledge from the wind or the flowers. Additionally, she is able to travel spiritually, communicating with people through dreams and visions. However, due to these powers being reliant on her connection with Gaia, Aerith will not have access to the them in the resort.

Also, Aerith is a capable fighter in battle, wielding a collapsible stave from which she can shoot magic projectiles; if she absolutely needs to, she can just hit an opposing fighter with it. She possesses some minor magical abilities that she has learned over her journeys, but her more powerful magical abilities come from the use of Materia, orbs formed of crystallized mako energy from her own planet.

Learned abilities:
❀ Arcane Ward: Aerith conjures a sigil on the ground; attack spells cast within will automatically dualcast.
❀ ATB Ward: Aerith summons a sigil on the ground; allies stood inside generate stamina faster.
❀ Chrono Aegis: Aerith conjures a barrier around herself that briefly stops and damages anyone who enters it.
❀ Lustrous Shield: Aerith conjures a magical shield that keeps enemies at bay and stops projectiles.
❀ Radiant Ward: Aerith conjures a sigil on the ground; while stood within it, it protects magic users from damage while they are casting. It also improves Aerith's own attack speed and dodging ability.
❀ Ray of Judgement: Aerith fires a non-elemental magical energy burst from her staff that hits multiple times.
❀ Soul Drain: Aerith unleashes an attack that absorbs magical energy from her opponents.
❀ Sorcerous Storm: Aerith deals non-elemental magic damage to nearby enemies.

VICES:
❀ STUBBORN, STRONG-WILLED β€” Aerith is very much a firm believer that she can handle things by herself. She's extremely determined, and when she sets her mind on a particular path, that's the end of anyone's chance to convince her to try something different. This has caused her in the past to be somewhat secretive about her plans, often only revealing what she intends to do once it's too late for anyone to try and sway her course. Such behavior has caused issues for her in the past and is certainly liable to do so within the resort if she's tempted toward doing something that could end up harmful.

❀ LONELY β€” As the only living descendant of the Cetra, Aerith feels quite lonely. There no one else like her, and her differences from others also led to her being isolated from other children as she grew up. Even as an adult, she's still marked as different, both by the people around her and the Shinra company. There's a part of her that wishes she could just be normal. This loneliness inspires a fear of rejection and abandonment that Aerith doesn't realize she has but informs her actions regardless, making her cling closely to people and demand their attention if she feels they're pulling away. The potential of losing people from the resort will be a great challenge for her. Additionally, having been pulled away from Gaia, she's likely to feel rudderless, as if the planet itself abandoned her. All in all, this could lead her to make foolish choices, and the House could certainly use it against her.

❀ SELFISH, SOCIALLY-UNAWARE β€” Aerith can be remarkably selfish despite her compassion. She does not like being ignored, and will get in someone's space and drag their attention back to her if she feels their attention isn't focused enough on her. This isn't a malicious action, but one borne of thoughtlessness and a lack of close, peer-level interactions with others. Similarly, she is often unaware when others are made to feel awkward by her playful, flirtatious way of interacting, missing the signals that most others would interpret as her needing to tone it down.

VIRTUES:
❀ JOYFUL; UPBEAT β€” Aerith has a naturally sunny disposition. She is outgoing and cheerful, and will make an effort to be friendly to anyone she meets. She also has a tendency to flirt with people she finds attractive. She has a quick and often mischievous sense of humor, a clever wit, and a playful approach to conversation. Overall, she is very much the type to live in the moment, enjoying everything that life has to offer. Even in a situation such as the one the resort has put the characters in, she's liable to take it mostly in her stride, doing her best to keep her spirits high as well as lift those of the people around her. She sees happiness as something precious, and doesn't want the resort to destroy that.

❀ FREE-SPIRITED β€” Outgoing and adventurous, Aerith is the kind of person who will both say and do exactly as she wishes, not allowing herself to be restrained by societal propriety. If there's something she wants, she'll go for it; the only thing that can stop her, generally, is if she knows someone she cares about will be hurt by the very thing she's chasing. Not even the least bit shy, she's not backward in coming forward, approaching situations from a place of frank honesty, and not really worrying what others might think of her for doing so. When it comes to the game that the characters are being forced to play, this will make it easier for her than some others, as she won't be uncomfortable about the need to have sex.

❀ COMPASSIONATE β€” Aerith tends to see the good in everyone, and tries to show kindness even to people whose ideologies are vastly different from her own. She also displays forgiveness even to those who might not necessarily deserve it. Some would probably say that such actions show naivety, but she would rather trust someone who turns out to be untrustworthy, than not trust someone who needed her trust. She is the sort of person to reject a rank-up for herself if it meant she could use her banked points to help someone else in a worse situation than she is.

SUIT REQUESTS:
Aerith probably most naturally fits the suit of Hearts. She is person strongly driven by her feelings as we can see in both her virtues and vices, and it's always interesting to see those positive feelings twisted into the extreme. With the Hearts suit, Aerith would have to learn that her emotions are not always good things, which for someone as stubborn as she is could be quite difficult. The suit activation also plays on some of her already-existing fears, giving her something to struggle with and inspire her to avoid triggering activation.

On the other hand, Spades might also be a really interesting suit for her due to her being such a genuinely good person. The potential for her to become arrogant, cruel, or even violent is interesting to me, I think even more than the potential that Hearts has. Experiencing a suit activation would make her fearful of it happening again, because she'd become extremely guilty at the effects it has on her when she does. Of course, while this would inspire her to play the game properly, I'd be keen to explore what happens when she makes a mistake or finds herself activated for some reason. kinda-sorta-Evil Aerith, anyone?
